Job Description We have an opening for a Research Scientist in microbial genomics and bioinformatics. Opportunities exist to develop scientific capabilities to improve bio surveillance and detection of pathogens from complex environments. You will develop new methods, tools, and workflows for analysis of complex samples to identify emerging and unknown pathogens and determine their functional impacts. The selected candidate will also work with multiomics datasets for integrated data analysis and prediction of results. This position is in the Genomics group in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division. This position will be filled at the SES.3 Level In this role you will: Apply molecular, bioinformatic and statistical methods on a diverse range of environmental and clinical samples to understand background microbial profiles and anomalies. Research, design, and implement analysis techniques and computing approaches for analyzing novel and unknown sequences and predict phenotypic outcomes. Perform quality analysis, quality control, and other independent tests of third-party algorithms, analysis methods, and data collection procedures and verify validity of results. Lead and manage diverse multidisciplinary teams to solve complex problems and deliver results to stakeholders Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory. Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings. Organize, analyze, and present data from research at seminars, technical meetings, national and international conferences. Qualifications Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, or a related field, or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge and relevant experience. Significant experience with collection and processing of complex clinical and environment samples. Advanced knowledge in bioinformatic analysis of environmental and clinical metagenomic datasets including sequence pre-processing, alignment, genome assembly, genomic feature identification and functional characterization. Ability to develop and apply novel analytical techniques for multiomic data integration. Significant experience in applying data analysis tools with Python, R, C++. Significant experience with statistical analysis and data visualization. Significant experience leading, managing and mentoring teams for success. Ability to develop independent research projects in microbial genomics, as demonstrated through prior funding awards and publication of peer-reviewed literature. Advanced verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information. Qualifications We Desire Significant experience with containerization toolkits such as Docker or Singularity and familiarity with high performance computing environments, including experience with workload managers such as Slurm, PBS/Torque, or Kubernetes. Significant experience with systems biology and multi-omics data analysis including proteomics, metabolomics, epigenetics and transcriptomics. Significant experience with wet lab techniques for sample processing such as DNA and RNA extraction, DNA sequencing, PCR and microarray. Significant experience with a variety of DNA sequencing technology platforms. Significant experience with Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning and applications to biological data.
